Redpath Mongolia LLC has an immediate opening for a UG Construction Project Manager to join their dynamic team at the Oyu Tolgoi Project in Mongolia.  The site is situated in Southern Mongolia in the heart of the Gobi Desert flatlands.

Location: Oyu Tolgoi

Rotation: 6 weeks on, 3 weeks off *This rotation is subject to change.  


Shift Length: 12 hours

Job Description

 

The Project Manager in Mongolia is accountable to the Site General Manager for the safe, efficient, legally compliant and profitable operation of the underground operations of the contract/s that are under their supervision that are related to lateral development and/or construction activities together with the associated staff and facilities.

 

The incumbent will provide leadership, development, and direction to his/her staff to ensure that the business objectives of Mongolia including safety, health, quality and profitability are consistently achieved.



Roles and Responsibilities:

 

General:

  • Monitor and proactively implement change to ensure that the project is achieving Zero Harm
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of project baselines and project execution plans, inclusive of managing the setup of project administrative aspects
  • Manage project performance tracking through daily, weekly and monthly reports
  • Recommend action to be taken should there be deviations from the optimal performance
  • Propose and implement authorized operating and capital expenditure strategies that will enhance the financial position of the project
  • Provide leadership, development and direction to subordinate staff members to drive productivity improvement within the team, optimise resource utilization to achieve more with less, and ensure that the stretch business objectives of the UDS Project are consistently achieved
  • Review, interview, and hire subordinate senior leadership team members
  • Review and determine project schedules with collaboration with the Client representatives, manpower budget, cost budget, and cost control with Engineering
  • Liaise effectively with Client representatives as well as other contracting companies’ personnel
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPI’s) with Operations and/or Construction Management
  • Conduct periodic reporting and interactions with local and national government officials to ensure compliance to regulations

 

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Excellent understanding of all underground mining cycles involved in lateral development, mass excavations, and vertical development. This includes equipment, personnel, and schedule
  • Excellent understating of construction methodologies that will follow IFC drawings and comply with strict QA/QC site standards that will lead to effective commissioning of infrastructure
  • Firm understanding of Block Caving along with initiation of a cave is an asset
  • Good analytical skills of mining data to identify efficiencies in the process to increase overall safety and production metrics
  • Good conceptual skills in understanding relationships between projects, the overall organization and its environment, and how change in one part of the project affects the whole
  • Promote and support the Company’s management team
  • Practice and promote the Company’s Philosophy and Guidelines for Success
  • Highly effective motivational and organizational skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English
  • Very strong interpersonal skills in order to develop effective internal and external relationships

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Having the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Follow Company and Oyu Tolgoi’s site health and safety standards and report any unsafe acts or conditions
  • Responsible to ensure the proper use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Comply with Oyu Tolgoi’s Critical Risk Management (CRM) requirements.
  • Following Company health and safety standards and reporting any unsafe acts or conditions to your immediate supervisor.
  • Responsible for ensuring the National workforce uses and maintains all safety equipment to the highest standard, i.e. Lanyards, safety signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
  • Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet for all materials used underground.
  • Ensure key elements of the safety program (including but not limited to emergency procedures, 5 point safety system, safety huddles, formal safety meetings and pre-starts, accident imaging, planned inspections, job observations, and JHA co-ordination) are being implemented on a shift by shift basis.
  • Ensure that all lockout and tag out procedures are followed and adhered to for all isolation works.
  • Ensure that all SWP’s are communicated to the workforce for the works we are undertaking.
  • Ensure all accidents and near misses are fully investigated and documented, root causes are identified, and remedies put into place.
  • Ensure employee safety through compliance with all safety and mine regulations.
  • Work with the allocated  safety advisors on a shift by shift basis to ensure that the construction teams are safety compliant and working within the site safety standards and procedures.
  • Mentor and work with the National Supervisors to ensure construction compliance to standards, procedures and design intent required in the work orders. Ensure solid understanding of requirements including shift planning, documentation and information, deliverables, and timing of construction and required materials.
  • Ensure that the shift crews have current and accurate work orders, drawings and specifications for the allocated work.
  • Actively educate the workforce on construction methodology through active supervision time in the field (minimum 80% of shift time). Ensure that the construction work force is working efficiently on all allocated works and provide mentoring to improve ways work can be continued in a safe efficient manner.
  • Complete daily shift reports to provide progress on the UG ELHL projects, highlighting construction delays, scope change and training.
  • Complete work status brief document at the end of each shift to be used for handover between crews. Assist with clarifying or defining parameters and deciding on construction processes to be utilized through daily handover meetings.
  • Work with National Supervisors to provide the material coordinators with material requirements for the upcoming projects. Utilize the daily shift work status brief to request materials with realistic durations.
  • Take appropriate action as critical dates approach to ensure a smooth transition from phase to phase with the objective of completing the project within the allocated time frames.
  • Work with the National Supervisors to ensure that all training requirements are completed, all required training has been booked and personnel attend.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

 

The incumbent will have a minimum 5-10 years of project management / controls experience in mining, shaft sinking, lateral development, or similar underground construction projects with a sound knowledge of contract principles and data manipulation into management information.

 

Education / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline from an accredited university
  • Project Management Certificate or similar certification is an asset

 

Work Experience / Skills

  • Able to interface with all cultures and levels of management and employees
  • Knowledge of business analytics, process mapping, and the ability to understand and implement effective workflows
  • Sound project management, planning and organisational skills, and able to manage competing priorities
  • Experience in dealing with difficult stakeholders where empathy and discretion is required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of and complete commitment to confidentiality
  • Strong computer, organisational, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Microsoft Office suite of products, in particular Outlook, Word, Excel, and Visio
  • Online meeting tools such as Skype, WebEx, and other meeting suites
